Steelhead fishing is upon us!! Steelhead are large, ocean-going rainbow trout native to Idaho and the northwest region. When adult steelhead leave the ocean and swim back to Idaho, they create one of the state’s most amazing fishing opportunities.
The website www.idfg.idaho.gov has so much information for you to glean! From Seasons and Rules in which zones to, How to fish for steelhead. Steelhead fishing is currently open on Clearwater River, the North Fork of the Clearwater, Middle Fork, and South Fork, from January 1st until April 30th. It does inquire that Seasons change quickly so it’s best to stay up to date on the rules and regulations.
The Kooskia and Kamiah areas are known for their awesome fishing, a quote from the Visiting Idaho website says this about the Clearwater River “One of the top steelhead streams in the Northwest, this river is famous for its large “B-Run” steelhead that return to the spawning areas after two years in the ocean. The rapids on the Clearwater are gentle and straightforward, allowing boaters the time to soak in the beauty of the surrounding wilderness in north-central Idaho.” Take a look at www.visitidaho.org it has more information on fishing on the Clearwater river with Things to know and do in the area, along with Outfitters and Guides Association information, and travel tips. Idaho fishing outfitters and guides can be very important to the success of your fishing trip. They are the life line to this area, they know the best way to catch what you are looking for from what lures or flies to use and where the best fishing holes are to fish. Guides are fishing the river everyday, using drift boats and or jet boats to get you to all the best areas on the river! On Anglers Edge I’m including their website. www.anglersedgeadventures.com Another good resource I’ve found online is https://fishidaho.org/ . Under the Find Your Trip button they show you fishing by the City or Zone, if you hit North Central where we are located, it gives you some information on outfitters along with websites and phone numbers. If you go down to Species it will then show you which outfitters are best with that particular fishing.
